Alternative Foundation, guided by the slogan “Think Alternative! Do Alternative!”, has established the Brain Gain Centre—the first of its kind to be operated at the non-governmental level in Nepal. The Centre serves as a hub for collecting and documenting personal details, expertise profiles, current engagements, and development interests of both Nepali diaspora and national experts who are committed to contributing to Nepal.
Traditionally, “brain gain” refers to the inflow of highly skilled, foreign-born professionals into a country offering greater opportunities. However, from another perspective, this also highlights the reality of brain drain faced by countries like Nepal, where a large number of talented individuals migrate abroad. Recognizing this challenge, the Brain Gain Centre promotes a new approach: leveraging the knowledge, skills, technology, and capital of non-resident Nepalis who hold tremendous potential to support national development.
With globalization, the presence of Nepali experts around the world—engineers, scientists, researchers, academics, economists, medical professionals, and innovators—has grown rapidly. They are contributing significantly across universities, industries, and research institutions worldwide. The Brain Gain Centre aims to tap into this intellectual wealth, aligning their expertise and commitment with broader national development goals through collaboration with both diaspora and national experts.
